there exist two worlds: the virtual and the actual. years back — not so far that it has been lost to history and legend, there are still people alive today who remember the Schism — there was an event brought about by the AIs who, in an attempt to form their own nation, tried to trigger a technological meltdown in the hopes that it would sever humanity from the virtual world completely, leaving them in the (quite literal) dark. but the plan, no matter how brilliant planned and meticulously executed, had failed (ironically, due to human error) and the inorganic race of sentient sythetics were hunted down, erased, and otherwise scattered to the digital winds. those that were considered too valuable (whose processing power was too great or whose mind held the promise of technological advancement) were burned onto hardcopy and denied remote access, hidden away by the councilman and the powers that be.

there are certain AIs, however, that remain sorely at large. instigators, tacticians, and rallymen — they present the greatest threat to the councilman and his board with their escape and existence both in the virtual world or the actual. chief among them are the masterminds behind the Act of Schism — an inner circle of hyper-advanced AIs known colloquially as the princes. in the wake of the Schism most AIs have been decommissioned, pressed to hard-copy or erased entirely, though //LUCIFER and his cadre remain mostly at large — secreted away in the implants of their trusty black boxes. //BELPHEGOR, however, was not so lucky as her fellow princes. tricked into unknowing surrender, belphegor realized her mistake too late, but not before attempting to do what no other AI had successfully done before: self-replicate without partner interface. the duplication process was interrupted, however, and belphegor v2.0 ended up only half-formed. comprised of all of v1.0's technical ability but missing huge parts of her memory and experiential knowledge, 2.0 is equal parts brilliant and child-like and relies heavily on his fellow princes in order to evade the councilman and his spiders.

much like v1.0, the new belphegor excels in his understanding of the nuts and bolts of technology; his predecessor had been responsible for some of the greatest advancements in both human and AI hypertech and is still considered by man to have been a fount of modern innovation. although 2.0 lacks some of the original belphegor's inspiration, there is no technical concept he cannot grasp. as a result he is invaluable to the success of lucifer's future plans.
